Crystal Castles (August 9, Ogden, showcast post upcoming) might have something to say about that, though. Or Tokyo Police Club, or Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

"Cobb’s intercranial adventures aren’t like dreams at all — they’re like different kinds of action..."

“Cobb’s intercranial adventures aren’t like dreams at all — they’re like different kinds of...

New from Crocodiles, after a relatively long disappearance:...

New from Crocodiles, after a relatively long disappearance: “Sleep Forever”.
This one requires very little explanation — it’s the fucking Dodos. New Pornos are rumored to be terrible live, but I’ll probably stick around to at least decide that myself before taking off.

Say goodbye to the fuzzy, tape-hiss-dominated Wavves you once knew. KOTB is not only much cleaner than Wavvves — it’s much more innovative, too, featuring more loop-based tracks like “Baseball Cards” and Animal Collective-esque “Mickey Mouse” (which got a whole new, surfy “sha-na-na” added to the end of last summer’s version). Overall, the album sounds like Nathan Williams finally left the basement — you know, all that stuff about boredom — and got a little sun. Which is a good thing, in this case.

I...

Throwback Thursday: Elephant Shell by Tokyo Police Club. I listened to this album almost every day on the train to work two summers ago, and what really shines through to this day is its utter earnestness. The album works because, frankly, TPC just isn’t trying to bullshit anyone here. Musically, it’s pretty polished pop—catchy riffs, clappable drumbeats and punchy choruses are all common on Elephant Shell. But the lyrics are where this album really glows: “Won’t you tell me a little bit about / A bit about yourself,” we’re asked by frontman Dave Monks—and it’s exactly the awkward, high-schooly quality of that inquiry that gives it its genuineness. It’s an album about making real, human connections in a world that often isn’t as honest as a Tokyo Police Club song.

Elephant Shell (2008): saddle creek | amazon
